In the Spring2012 newsletter, see photos of Housing Summit 2012, “Green & Healthy makes $en$e”, read ideas about effective inspection programs after RUCO (email your ideas to beth@greensborohousingcoalition.com), and join GHC to make a difference in safe and affordable housing.
Green & Healthy really does make $en$e. The bus tour video is now online. HousingSummit2012 on February 29 was a tremendous opportunity for inspiration, networking, and new partnerships. Shirley Franklin, CEO of Purpose Built Communities (www.purposebuiltcommunities.org) and former Mayor of Atlanta, was the keynote speaker. Energy efficient healthy homes are a smart investment–for homeowners, neighborhoods, rental owners, public officials, lenders, and developers. Preventing housing deterioration helps educators and health care providers, homeless prevention groups and refugee advocates.
Also at the Summit, three lucky participants won prizes: a Sustainable Getaway Package at the PROXIMITY HOTEL, Spring Break at Carolina Grande Hotel at Myrtle Beach (courtesy of Daphne Nxumalo) and fine china and tableware from REPLACEMENTS LTD.
You paid your mortgage on time and worked every day. Then you lost your job through no fault of your own. There is HOPE to keep your home! ALERT! ALERT! ALERT! Planning to repair or paint a home built before 1978? Because many older homes have lead paint under the newer layers of paint, North Carolina has a new Renovation, Remodeling, and Painting Rule (RRP) that went into effect January 1, 2010. The basic requirements are 1) Warn occupants by giving the booklet “Renovate Right” (which you can download renovaterightbrochure) and posting signs to keep people out of the work area. 2) Contain the work area to keep dust from spreading in the home and surrounding neighborhood. 3) Don’t use machine sanders, heat guns, or torches. 4) Safely store and transportwaste from the work area. 5) Clean the work area until no dust or residue remains. Workers must be certified to do this work in pre-1978 homes and child-occupied facilities. To get certification training, visit http://www.epi.state.nc.us/epi/asbestos/healthaz.htmlfor a list of approved training providers.
