GHA administers Supportive Housing Program

In February 2008, the Greensboro Housing Authority began administering a unique grant funding by HUD, called Housing Opportunities, which offers rental assistance in the private market, along with a range of supportive services provided by area agencies. The grant is designed to assist persons who are disabled and chronically homeless according to HUD definitions. GHA is currently accepting referrals from partners in the housing coalition to fill available slots in the grant. If you know of a consumer who is both disabled and chronically homeless, please contact GHC to begin the referral process.

Whether you are a homeowner or rental property owner, contractor or home repair volunteer, when you paint or renovate an older home you are likely to encounter old lead paint and release lead dust. EPA posted the Final Rule about the Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting Program on April 22, 2008. To work lead safe and clean, most of the supplies are inexpensive–duct tape, plastic, masks. But the lead-dust HEPA vacuum is essential, so call GHC at 691-9521 to borrow ours! Watch the video link in DON’T SPREAD LEAD and read the booklet. Wachovia Foundation supports Preserving Homeownership

Preserving Homeownership

The problems are clear: the dream of homeownership has become a nightmare for too many of our neighbors. Foreclosures resulting from rising interest rates, job losses, or family breakups, costing lenders and displacing families. Declining property values resulting from foreclosures in the surrounding areas, leaving many owing more on their mortgages than the current value of their houses and eroding the tax base.

The solutions need to become clear, as well: help homeowners work out reasonable payment plans to help lenders, families, neighbors, and communities to preserve homeownership. The Preserving Homeownership Tour brought together elected leaders, lenders, realtors, policy analysts, and homeownership counselors to build partnerships for preserving homeownership. Join with Mayor Yvonne Johnson, Congressional Members Mel Watt and Brad Miller, NC Legislators Maggie Jeffus and Kay Hagan in their commitment to homeownership.

Look at the map, the statistics about the foreclosure starts by county, the impact of foreclosures and subprime mortgages on neighbors’ values — and the ways you can help. Tell others to call 691-9521 for housing counseling as soon as they have trouble with their mortgages and support GHC’s services!

Fair Housing: Enhancing Housing Quality; Cost of Substandard Housing

Greensboro’s Rental Certification program enhances housing quality. For the full study by UNC graduate student Carol Hickey, click here. In NC in 2006, substandard housing resulted in costs of almost $95 million for children’s health care and related expenses. For the full study by Dr. David Chenoweth, click here.
