    PROMOTING HOMEOWNERSHIP

    Promoting Homeownership

Homeownership builds wealth, brings stability, increases pride, and fulfills the American Dream. Most of the time. But buying one’s first home can be stressful and maintaining it can become overwhelming, especially if the mortgage payment is higher than a family can afford or the house needs repairs. To prepare future homeowners for the obstacles, GHC’s More Than Just a Mortgage classes, in Spanish and English, inform about all the options, so that homebuyers can choose for themselves the home and loan that best suit their own situation.

And to help homeowners with the challenges that come after purchase–such as being unable to pay the mortgage on time or trying to get the roof replaced–GHC counsels them on the options. When homeowners face foreclosure, GHC counselors work through budgets with homeowners to see if a repayment plan is realistic, then negotiate with the mortgage lender to see if the plan is acceptable. This saves homeowners their houses and lenders their investment. GHC also visits homeowners to assist with applications to home repair programs, sorting out the appropriate program to fit the problem, from lead paint hazards to faulty heating systems to rotten floors.

GHC housing counselors providing homebuyer education and foreclosure counseling are certified!
